Those who meditate can enhance their cognitive function

So many people rely on coffee to sharpen their minds in the morning, but a new study from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine suggests that all it takes to wake up and freshen the brain is a little meditation.

For practitioners of yoga, meditation is a necessary part of the regimen. The calming techniques – which are centered around deep breathing and harmonious postures – have helped relieve stress, tension and anxiety for countless individuals all over the globe. Among those who have embraced the art of Dahn Yoga, energy may no longer be in short supply, and these people could also be enhancing their cognitive function.

Study author Fadel Zeidan found that individuals who meditated for just 20 minutes a day experienced greater mindfulness and better performance on critical cognitive tests within a span of four days.

"The profound improvements that we found after just four days of meditation training are really surprising," Zeidan said. "It goes to show that the mind is, in fact, easily changeable and highly influenced, especially by meditation."

Waking up to a calming regimen of yoga may be the best way to start the day. For those who choose Dahn Yoga, energy levels may subsequently rise and a harmonious, balanced lifestyle may ensue.
