Yoga is a common coping method for urban teenagers with asthma
Those who engage in yoga tend to report good health, and a recent study from the University of Cincinnati suggests that adolescents who suffer from asthma may report better outcomes through gentle breathing, posing and meditation.
Spiritual coping as a form of complementary medicine may ensure that urban teenagers optimize symptom management, experts said. The results of this study could potentially help medical providers gain insight into creative ways with which to help younger patients self-manage chronic ailments.
"These findings show that this group of chronically ill adolescents is using complementary methods and finding them helpful," explained lead author Sian Cotton, an assistant professor of family and community medicine. "Providers should consider discussing the use of complementary or alternative medicine with their patients with asthma to help improve outcomes."
He added that physicians can encourage asthmatic teens to use coping methods such as yoga in order to ensure the best physical, mental, emotional and spiritual outcomes, which can lead to better quality of life.
