Self healing techniques of yoga may help athletes on anti-seizure drug

People who have seizures may take certain medications to help control their symptoms. The drug clonazepam can help some patients, but it may also cause side effects such as dizziness, muscle pain, drowsiness or problems with coordination, according to the National Library of Medicine. Furthermore, athletes could experience changes in their metabolism, as well as other symptoms, that make them less willing to exercise. Thankfully, the self healing techniques of yoga can help athletes stay physically active.

"An athlete should choose yoga poses that do not require him or her to stand for very long, especially if he or she is experiencing dizziness. An athlete should focus his or her yoga routine on poses that are done sitting down, and poses that are not very stressful on the body," Jeanne Rose, a hospital dietary clerk and certified nursing assistant, wrote in Yahoo! Sports.

Such poses can help boost both energy and metabolism. Beginners may want to practice with a partner nearby until they have a better idea of how their medication affects the way they perform yoga. The community members of Dahn Yoga classes may be willing to help.

In addition to yoga, Rose also suggested that patients who take clonazepam may benefit from a stationary bicycle or indoor jogging.

Yoga movie screening chronicles women’s knowledge of the secrets of self healing

The Maui Film Festival will screen the documentary "Yogawoman" on Wednesday, February 8, as reported by Maui Now. The movie chronicles the history of yoga's secrets of self healing, and how women have come to not only appreciate the mind-body regimen, but also to contribute their own wisdom to it.

"The film is not trying to claim that men cannot receive the same benefits from yoga as women, nor that men have not contributed to the growth of yoga as a global practice. It only illuminates another historical shift that women have naturally influenced," Madeline Ziecker wrote in her summary of the movie.

"Yogawoman" was produced, directed and written by Kate Clere McIntire and Saraswati Clere. Academy Award-nominated actress Annette Bening narrates. The screening will raise funds for Women Helping Women, an anti-domestic violence group.

Event hosts are also planning a pre-screening yoga session at the A&B Amphitheater from 6 to 7 p.m., in an attempt to set a record for the largest Hawaiian yoga class, according to the news source.

Anyone interested in checking out the holistic healing technique after the festival should look into their local Dahn Yoga centers. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, health benefits of yoga include improved physical fitness and stress management.

Yoga’s secrets of self healing can help seniors

People may perceive yoga to be something of a fashion statement for younger people trying to stay fit and flexible. However, the mind-body regimen's secrets of self healing can also be of benefit to seniors, as reported by The Telegraph.

Gentle yoga techniques that emphasize breathing and relaxation could help older people strengthen their muscles, improve joint flexibility and support optimal energy levels, practitioners told the news source. In the long term, such benefits could help avert medical complications that require more intense interventions.

While yoga may not necessarily cause drastic health changes, it could positively change the attitudes that older people have toward their well-being, yoga teacher Fenella Lindsell told the news source.

"I walk straighter, and taller. I feel I've got more mobility in my joints and – just as importantly – I meet other people, have a good time and chat," said 82-year-old practitioner Carmen O’Neill, as quoted by The Telegraph. "It's keeping me young."

Any seniors interested in Hawaii yoga classes for their health would be in good company. According to a survey published in the Yoga Journal in 2008, 14 million Americans were practicing yoga based on the suggestion of a doctor or other therapist.

Self healing techniques of yoga may help abnormal heartbeat

According to the American Heart Association, 2.7 million Americans are living with atrial fibrillation (AF), a form of irregular heartbeat that causes episodes of chest pain, faintness and other symptoms while increasing people's risk of stroke. While there are medications that may help correct this problem, researchers are looking into how the self healing techniques of yoga may complement traditional therapy, as reported in heartwire.

"Yoga doesn't really cure atrial fibrillation, but it definitely improves the symptoms and the arrhythmia burden," researcher Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy said at the Boston Atrial Fibrillation Symposium 2012, as quoted by the news source.

In a phase I study of 49 AF patients trained in a form of yoga, 22 percent of subjects had no new episodes. Results also showed improvements in anxiety/depression scores, blood pressure, resting heart rate and other factors.

The researchers speculated that yoga may help improve the health of the autonomic nervous system, which regulates the unconscious control of different parts of the body. Larger studies are currently underway to further investigate the influence of the mind-body connection on AF, according to the news source.

If any cardiac patients are interested in yoga classes, there are two things they should do: visit their local Dahn Yoga centers to find out more, and consult their doctors.

Yoga teaches fitness entrepreneur secrets of self healing

When individuals hire a personal trainer to help them get into shape, they place a lot of trust in that person's hands. Trainers are expected to be knowledgeable about different aspects of health, including effective exercise routines and an optimal diet. However, that's not to say that personal trainers can't still be students. One example is fitness entrepreneur Mary Letson, who learned the secrets of self healing from yoga.

"The yoga postures provide a brilliant balance with my regular exercise routine, mostly running. Yoga provides a calm center from which to build strength, flexibility, youthful joints and fabulous posture," said Letson, as quoted by the Bowen Island Undercurrent. "And that has also inspired my personal training practice."

In addition to the physical benefits of yoga, the mind-body regimen also teaches practitioners how to be more mindful of the present, Letson said. Meditative breathing can help individuals access an inner source of peace.

Anyone who is curious about how yoga can help them in their lives should feel free to visit Dahn Yoga centers in their area. People who practice such exercises may derive a number of positive health effects, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. These may include improvements in blood pressure, body composition and stress management.

Self healing techniques of yoga may be less hazardous than high-contact sports

It is common knowledge that physical activity is essential to overall health and fitness, but there are so many exercises to choose from. Depending on your personal tastes, you may opt for the self healing techniques of yoga or the aquatic fun of swimming. However, high-contact sports such as football or rugby can increase one's risk of osteoarthritis in the knee or hip, as reported by Reuters.

Researchers from Sweden conducted a study of more than 700 retired athletes who participated in both contact and non-contact sports, such as soccer or running, respectively. They also looked at about 1,400 men who got little to no exercise.

Results showed that enthusiasts of high-contact sports were more likely to have osteoarthritis, according to the news source, but similar results were not seen in those who seldom participated.

"If you're an overweight, middle-aged runner who wants to run at an intense level, there are better ways of staying in shape without risking a knee injury," the researchers emailed to Reuters. The news source added that yoga was a good example of an exercise that does not wear down the joints.

Not only is yoga useful as a low-impact activity, but a recent study from the University of York also suggested that the mind-body regimen can even help alleviate lower back pain.

Yoga taught actress Andie MacDowell the secrets of self healing

Different generations of celebrities are embracing the health benefits of yoga, ranging from "Glee" star Lea Michele and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine to veteran actress Andie MacDowell, who said in a recent interview that these exercises taught her the secrets of self healing.

"Yoga's helped everything," she said, as quoted by Yoga Magazine. "It's helped my outlook, how I interact with people, it's made me more conscious, it's helped me be able to focus, make better decisions, think on my feet. I don't know what I'd do without it. It's my sanctuary."

MacDowell, who is known for her roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Groundhog Day and the recent remake of Footloose, said that after 25 years, yoga is not just a physical exercise for her, but also a form of spirituality.

People who are interested in taking up beginners yoga classes in Honolulu for their health are not alone. In 2003, 5.6 percent of yoga practitioners took up the mind-body exercise to improve their overall health, according to the Yoga Journal. By 2008, that rate jumped to 49 percent. That same year, the population of American adults practicing yoga reached nearly 16 million individuals.

Yoga’s self healing techniques can reduce arthritis pain

For people who are over the age of 60, neck aches, back pain symptoms and stiff joints are all indications of the possibility of arthritis, which is a condition that affects millions of Americans. Whether you live in the cold wastes of Alaska or on the warm, tropical beaches of Hawaii, joint trouble can be a serious problem.

More than 1.5 million U.S. adults suffer from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Recently, a team of researchers from the United Arab Emirates announced that yoga-based therapies may reduce pain and increase mobility for people with RA.

This conclusion, which the group presented at the European League Against Rheumatism's 2011 Annual Congress, was based on an experiment performed among 47 individuals with RA. In all, 26 were led through 12 sessions of yoga.

The Emirati scientists discovered that RA patients who did the yoga-based self healing techniques reported improved quality if life and decreased pain levels.

These findings may be good news for the 50 million adults whom the CDC estimates suffer from arthritis, gout, lupus or fibromyalgia.

Experts: Self healing techniques of yoga could support healthy aging

Some women may go to drastic lengths to fight the effects of aging, including crash diets and plastic surgery. However, a panel of experts says that the more conservative self healing techniques of yoga may work wonders, according to an article from Yahoo! Sports.

One of the benefits that can be derived from Hawaii yoga classes is improved circulation, according to Larry Payne, PhD, of Loyola Marymount. Facial exercises, performed for five to 10 minutes a day, can increase blood flow in the face and prevent wrinkles, according to the news source. Certain inversions and upside-down poses could also improve the flow of lymphatic fluid, a mechanism that helps reduce cellulite, as noted in Yahoo! Sports.

Yoga can make the skin look younger as well by relieving stress and improving one's ability to sleep, according to studies cited by the news source.

The American Dietetic Association believes that yoga can make one more mindful of what one eats, which, when combined with the exercises, may help one reach and maintain an optimal weight.

As of 2007, more than 13 million Americans had practiced yoga within the previous year, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

Enthusiasts in Hawaii make good use of yoga’s self healing techniques

Whether you suffer from headaches, arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis or back pain, yoga classes may be able to help you get these aches under control. In Hawaii, yoga-based self healing techniques can be done nearly anywhere, from the rim of a volcano to the cleansing waters of the Pacific.

The Independent Online reports that one form of Hawaii yoga is increasing in popularity, both in the Aloha state and in the contiguous 48. It's called paddleboard yoga or "yogaboarding," and it crosses the relaxation of meditation with the muscular workout of paddleboarding.

That is not to say that this form of the mind-body regimen is exceptionally hard on the body. In fact, many practitioners find that their favorite part involves sitting and stretching while the Pacific swells rise and fall around them.

Hawaii yoga instructor Eric Hiss noted that the routine just takes a little getting used to.

"Even beginners have little problems with the basics [of yogaboarding]," he told FOX News. "Obviously, you have to do this somewhere very calm."

For those who don't feel like hitting the waves and self healing at the same time, there are dozens of other yoga techniques one can do on dry land.
