Individuals all over the world have enjoyed the benefits of yoga, which include but are not limited to improved mood, strength, flexibility and stamina. Although the holistic mind-body regimen is typically practiced by adults, it can also have positive effects on children, according to the Patriot Ledger.

One yoga studio in Norwell, Massachusetts, is offering classes called Itsy Bitsy Yoga, to which moms and dads can bring along their bundles of joy. Parents are encouraged to join in the deep breathing techniques, poses and stretches of the program with children from infancy to 4 years of age.

"This class helps moms and babies with bonding," said instructor Kate Youngclaus, quoted by the news source. "There is nothing strenuous, only little stretches. The moves really help with the hips – babies can be so closed in."

She added that the poses can help with digestion and allow both parents and children to achieve optimal health, both physically and mentally.

The class could be a "nice place for new moms to come" and socialize with other parents, all while enhancing the connection between their minds and bodies, Youngclaus said.

Yoga taught actress Andie MacDowell the secrets of self healing.

Different generations of celebrities are embracing the health benefits of yoga, ranging from "Glee" star Lea Michele and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine to veteran actress Andie MacDowell, who said in a recent interview that these exercises taught her the secrets of self healing.

"Yoga's helped everything," she said, as quoted by Yoga Magazine. "It's helped my outlook, how I interact with people, it's made me more conscious, it's helped me be able to focus, make better decisions, think on my feet. I don't know what I'd do without it. It's my sanctuary."

MacDowell, who is known for her roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Groundhog Day and the recent remake of Footloose, said that after 25 years, yoga is not just a physical exercise for her, but also a form of spirituality.

People who are interested in taking up beginners yoga classes in Honolulu for their health are not alone. In 2003, 5.6 percent of yoga practitioners took up the mind-body exercise to improve their overall health, according to the Yoga Journal. By 2008, that rate jumped to 49 percent. All across the U.S., people dream of shucking off their daily responsibilities, traveling to Hawaii and starting a new, more relaxing life. This idea is one of the concepts for the pilot of a newly created HBO comedy, which depicts a frazzled executive's recovery and self-discovery in Hawaii yoga classes.

Called "Enlightenment," the show stars actress Laura Dern, whose diverse screen credits include Jurassic Park, Blue Velvet and Rambling Rose, for which she received an Academy Award nomination.

She recently told the UK Telegraph that besides being a smirking look at high-powered office workers, the comedy is intended to seriously address the difficulties modern people have in relaxing, reflecting and finding themselves.

No wonder the show features self-healing meditation on the beaches of Hawaii! What better way to pursue self-discovery and serenity?

Mike White, the show's lead writer and Dern's co-star, told the newspaper that "Enlightenment" is based on real experiences he had with crippling anxiety and his attempts to get back on his feet using holistic mind-body treatments.

"I'm not completely making fun of therapy, because I've had my own nervous breakdowns, read self-help books, meditated and done yoga," he explained, quoted by the news source.

According to Emmanuella Symeonaki, a 40-year-old who was recently introduced to the program, engaging in yoga helps bring "a little bit of the extraordinary, a little bit of magic into your life."

Seniors' balance and confidence improve after taking part in yoga

Practicing Dahn Yoga can be a great way to achieve good health, particularly if enthusiasts are older and want to reduce the likelihood of developing chronic diseases. According to research from Indiana University, seniors who have experienced a stroke can engage in the gentle breathing and stretching of yoga to decrease their risk of having painful falls.

Scientists evaluated 19 men and one woman, all of whom were around the age of 66. Over a period of two months, the participants engaged in hour-long yoga sessions twice a week. Their progress was then assessed using the Berg and Fullerton Advance Balance Scales.

Lead author Arlene A. Schmid and her colleagues from the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center found that the seniors' balance and confidence both improved after taking part in the holistic mind-body program.

"It also was interesting to see how much the men liked it," Schmid said. "They enjoyed it so much partly because they weren't getting any other treatment. Everything was modified because we wanted them to be successful on day one. Everyone could be successful at some level."

For people who are over the age of 60, neck aches, back pain symptoms and stiff joints are all indications of the possibility of arthritis, which is a condition that affects millions of Americans. Whether you live in the cold wastes of Alaska or on the warm, tropical beaches of Hawaii, joint trouble can be a serious problem.

More than 1.5 million U.S. adults suffer from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Recently, a team of researchers from the United Arab Emirates announced that yoga-based therapies may reduce pain and increase mobility for people with RA.

This conclusion, which the group presented at the European League Against Rheumatism's 2011 Annual Congress, was based on an experiment performed among 47 individuals with RA. In all, 26 were led through 12 sessions of yoga.

The Emirati scientists discovered that RA patients who did the yoga-based self healing techniques reported improved quality if life and decreased pain levels.

These findings may be good news for the 50 million adults whom the CDC estimates suffer from arthritis, gout, lupus or fibromyalgia.
